Usage
This closed-cell round backer rod, 20mm in diameter and supplied in a 150m coil, is designed for use as a joint filler and support for sealants in construction and glazing applications. Ideal for expansion joints, window frames, or façade assemblies.
Advantages
- Provides an effective backing to control sealant depth and optimizes joint geometry.
- Closed-cell structure resists water absorption for enhanced durability.
- Flexible yet firm material adapts to irregular joint surfaces without losing shape.
- Simplifies application of sealant by preventing three-sided adhesion.
- The bulk format (150m) reduces waste on larger projects but may be excessive for small-scale repairs.
Specifications
- Circular profile with a nominal diameter of 20mm; total length per coil: 150 meters.
- Manufactured from closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foam, offering high resistance to compression set and chemicals commonly used in building materials.
- Sustains continuous service temperatures typically between -40°C and +90°C; water absorption less than 1% by volume according to standard test methods.
- Lightweight (approx. density: ~30 kg/m³), non-staining, odorless, compatible with most one- or two-component sealants (e.g., silicone, polyurethane).
How it works
The backer rod is inserted into the joint gap before applying sealant. Its compressible foam fills the void while limiting the depth of the sealant bead above it; this ensures proper adhesion only on two sides of the joint, improving overall performance and flexibility of movement.
